WHCP strives to eliminate blood blood-borne infections that can be transmitted through unprotected sex and drug use by providing prevention education and supplies, WHCP also provides testing services to (a) prevent transmission of infection from one individual to another and (b) identify infection early on in order to increase pro-active measures of transmission to others, and success of treatment of these infections.
Community Healthcare Network, a local non-profit organization that provides healthcare services to the under-resourced and under-served in New York City, provides on site rapid HIV testing to WHCP participants and community members of Upper Manhattan. Every 2nd and 4th Wednesday, any individual can come to get a free rapid HIV test, which consists of a pre-test, oral swab for testing, and results within 20 minutes. Early detection of HIV is not only important to the individual with regard to treatment options but is also an essential component of stopping the spread of HIV to individuals in that individual’s community by learning effective sexual and drug use practices to prevent transmission. Individuals who are interested in receiving an HIV test at WHCP can come during HIV Testing hours or call the front desk to learn about other free HIV testing sites.
Unlike Hepatitis A and B, there is currently no vaccine to prevent Hepatitis C. WHCP provides on site Hepatitis C testing every Wednesday from 10am-4pm and during CUHRON CORNER Clinic hours to any individual who may have any risk factors including, but not limited to, sharing syringes, sharing cookers, sharing straws (intranasal drug use), sharing stem tips, receiving a non-licensed tattoo or piercing, blood transfusions prior to 1992 and any other behavior/practice in which exposure to contaminated blood was possible. This test involves a pre-test, full blood draw and results are returned to the individual within 2 weeks. Early detection of Hepatitis C is essential for success of medical treatment. Individuals who are interested in receiving a Hepatitis C test can walk in during CUHRON CORNER Clinic or vaccine event hours and speak to the front desk to be directed.
WHCP receives vaccines from the NYCDOH GRATIS Vaccine program and provides Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Influenza/H1N1 and Pneumococcal vaccines to WHCP participants and the Upper Manhattan community free of charge, no insurance or ID required.
