Interning & Volunteering

WHCP has many opportunities for students and community members to volunteer at our organization. Volunteers have been an essential part of our organization’s growth and every contribution is valued. From assisting staff on street-based outreach shifts to working on WHCP marketing materials, there is something for everyone. Some of the activities and programs volunteers can be involved in include, but are not limited to:

* Service provision on outreach shifts around the George Washington Bus Terminal
* Administrative and program support in the drop-in space
* Neighborhood ‘walkabouts’ speaking to community members about WHCP services
* Medical services at our CUHRON CORNER Clinic (medical students only)
* Data analysis and administering needs assessment surveys
* Fundraising and donation requests
* Community resource mapping
* Developing marketing materials

All new volunteers and interns are required to complete the WHCP Training Institute series that is offered on a quarterly basis. These session outline WHCP’s history and mission, harm reduction principles, outreach strategies and tips, safer injection education, safer sex education and overview of HIV and Hepatitis C. In addition to these trainings, all new volunteers and interns will also complete a SEP Regulations and Needlestick Prevention training provided by the NYS AIDS Institute and an overdose prevention training.

If you are a student or community member interested in volunteering, please register for the next WHCP Training Institute to begin your volunteer experience. If you are interested in starting to volunteer sooner than the training series is offered, please e-mail volunteer@cornerproject.org with a basic letter or interest and your availability to see if arrangement can be made.

If you are a student interested in receiving internship hours for your degree (Associates, Baccalaureate, Masters, MD or PhD), please contact the Program Director, Taeko Frost, to be directed to the staff member who would be able to supervise your fieldwork experience.
